I am the Elder

I am the elder.

Your generation flows from me.

Your values evolved from the practice of mine.

When I shouted, sometimes you listened,

Sometimes not.  But I heard your cries

And spent the night by your bed.

I am the elder.

My wisdom did not grow without pain.

My laughter does not flow without tears.

My loving has not been free from fears.

My vision is no longer keen.

But I am vital, still.

I have given you all, and yet there is more.

I am your link with the past

And your view of the future.

I am your memory of who you were.

I am a part of who you are.

And I am who you will be.

I am the elder.
